Join MYCO

We welcome new intermediate and advanced string players and pianists age 10-18 to audition for MYCO before the beginning of each semester as well as before the summer workshop.

Chamber music and its values are at the heart of MYCO.

Chamber music values — collaboration, communication, creativity and artistry — are what MYCO strives to foster in all of its activities.

In 2025-2026, MYCO students will participate in weekly chamber music groups, as well as improvisation workshops, master classes, piano seminar, and other activities. MYCO activities take place on Sunday afternoons in the music buildings at UNC-CH.

MYCO will offer a special chamber orchestra project for all students at the end of each semester, during which students will have the chance to play and perform side-by-side with MYCO faculty and guest artists.

Yearlong Program

During the school year, MYCO offers a program on Sunday afternoons for intermediate and advanced string players and pianists between the ages of 10 and 18.

The fall semester typically begins in mid to late September, with the final concert the weekend before Christmas. The spring semester typically starts in late January or early February, with the final concert around Memorial Day weekend.

During the final weekend of each semester, MYCO offers an intensive chamber orchestra project led by guest artists. Previous guest artists have included the Jupiter String Quartet, A Far Cry, and The Sebastians.

Students are placed in one of two rehearsal sessions on Sunday afternoons: 1:15-3:15pm or 4:30-6:30pm.

There is a special activity session between the two rehearsal sessions from 3:25-4:25pm. Special activities may include workshops, masterclasses, performance classes, and improvisation. Summer Workshop

About the workshop

MYCO’s Summer Workshop offers an intensive chamber music summer program for pre-college and college students within a supportive, nurturing environment on the beautiful campus of UNC-Chapel Hill. The workshop takes place during one week in June.

  • Open to highly accomplished string players and pianists ages 14-21

  • Coaching by world-class chamber musicians

  • Chamber orchestra, chamber music coaching, and improvisation

Mentorship program for college students

The summer workshop mentorship program gives college-aged music students the opportunity to participate in chamber groups and receive instruction from high caliber professional musicians. In return for a tuition waiver, college students provide mentorship and guidance to MYCO’s pre-college students.

MYCO mentors are chosen on the basis of artistic excellence as well as leadership qualities. If you'd like to be considered, please prepare a short essay paragraph describing your leadership and mentorship qualities and submit it to myco.registrar@gmail.com, along with a recent video of your playing.
